A Glimpse of "Old England" at its Most Picturesque
DURATION: UP TO 9-HOURS
With one of our licensed Blue Badge Driver-Guides, you will discover The Cotswolds, getting a glimpse of old England at its most picturesque. With its golden villages and picturesque dry stone walls, it’s easy to forget that the escarpment is over 1,000ft in places. This is sheep country, full of wool, churches, gorgeous views and fine pubs.
There is no standard route through the Cotswolds and every Driver-Guide has their own secrets they will want to share, from wonderful views to village inns and from formal gardens to historic houses, but if you have any specific interests or wishes, let us know at the time of booking. Your customised private tour of the Cotswolds might include pretty Broadway with its steep high street lined with shops, or Chipping Campden, which has a 400-year-old stone market hall, barrel-vaulted wood merchants’ graves in the churchyard and fine sundials carved on its walls.
The Saxon market town of Winchcombe has its own ‘grand house’, Sudeley Castle, where fashionable, pious Katherine Parr – last and surviving wife of Henry VIII – was married to Thomas Seymour. Bourton-on-the-Water, with its waterways and bridges, is often called the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ and villages such as Burford and Broadway are famed for their grand high streets lined with houses. Your Driver-Guide will show you magnificent houses and gardens cultivated by talented individuals, from Kiftsgate to Hidcote, with its famous outdoor ‘rooms.’ There are also wonderful shops and very good pubs making a point of serving local food.
