Embrace History in Champagne
DURATION: UP TO 11-HOURS
Start off your tour with a drive with your private driver from Paris to Reims, the capital of the sparkling champagne.
With a knowledgeable English-speaking driver, you will discover Reims, a modern and lively town counting four sites listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage, including the 12th century Cathedral, famous for 600 years of coronations of French Kings, and Basilica of St. Rémi. Enjoy the elegance of its Art Deco facades and a relaxed atmosphere.
The estate known as the Château de la Marquetterie was founded in 1734. Here you can see the Taittinger Cellars, where superb bottles of wine are laid out in pyramids in the Gallo-Roman crayères and in the crypts of the old abbey Saint-Nicaise, destroyed during the revolution.
Afterward, visit Epernay, founded by tanners in the 5th century and located in the heart of the Champagne vineyards. It is the ideal place to start exploring the top Champagne producers. The majestic Avenue de Champagne has 110 kilometers of cellars.
Enter the 28km long cellars of Moet et Chandon containing the equivalent of 90 million bottles. Follow the various stages in making champagne, including «remuage» (turning) and "dégorgement" (extraction of sediment). Take a guided visit into the crayères where the house keeps the bottles aging.
Then, drive along the Route de Champagne. Just a 10 minute drive to the south of Reims, you will find the vineyard covered slopes of Montagne de Reims. Once you reach the village of Ludes, you are in the “Grande Montagne” region, the kingdom of pinot noir. Enjoy a tasting in Mailly.
